Creative Director, MOMOmedia

I have been designing websites and digital graphics since the early days of HTML, my first venture into the internet cloud was maintaining a Bulletin Board System (BBS) for the Department of National Defence when I was a soldier in our great military, and yes it was a modem based dial up system.

[insert how to age yourself here].

Until now this has all been a very passionate hobby, but out of frustration and an insatiable appetite for information I have become anxious about the state of small business and how they [you] get your business online. Thanks to the growing social media niche there is a trend for small businesses to get out into the media hub or “get left behind”.

These days everyone is on the Facebook bandwagon, and why not, it’s free. But if you are using Facebook solely to drive your business then we need to talk soon. You need to understand how allowing a company that has little interest in your personal security, backing up your files or giving you back your files should run your business website. Now don’t get me wrong, Facebook is a great tool for marketing yourself, but it lacks in reliability. Do you remember Myspace? Enough said…

I started MOMOmedia out of frustration, that’s right, I was mad. Whenever I wanted to find something on the internet, be it a small part for my lawnmower, a piece of technology for my home or a “HOWTO” on tiling my kitchen I was glad to find a small business in my area that had taken the time to invest in a website. In anticipation I would “click”, only to find a mess of text based jumble mixed in with skewed graphics and table based layouts that made me scroll forever just to find a phone number. Have you ever heard the term first impressions are everything? Well, when you have a website that is designed badly, this signifies a sign of weakness on your part to promote your small business effectively. After all would you stick a massive, blurry image of yourself in the Yellow Pages and expect someone to flip through 20 more pages to find your phone number? Check out this great article for more information ….

First off, I have to apologize to you on behalf of all my fellow graphic designers and website design companies. In terms of cost, they have made it very difficult for you to invest in a professionally designed website and to upkeep the information contained within. Therefore, you have had to resort to your big sister’s techie 16 year old son to design your website on your personal web-space provided by your internet provider. Ain’t that the truth!

This is where I come in. Due to the explosion in CMS based tools I can help you have that site and you can maintain the content. I can show you how to add pictures and articles to your website and we can work together to build your online identity. Now, I must admit, working with me is not easy. I have an insatiable appetite for perfection that drives even me crazy. This goes back to my days in the military when the phrase pay attention to detail was as common as lining up at Timmies every morning. But in the end everything is done, done right and everyone walks away happy and a little more educated.

In closing, I would just like to add that I never intended on building websites or designing graphics, logos or posters and things of that nature. Like I said it was just a hobby. Through a business colleague I recently had the opportunity to put together a few websites because these people were just screaming out to get their business online. I was handed the opportunity to help them and now they are happy. I keep hearing the phrase “why don’t you do more of this?”, or “I know tons of people you can help”. I keep getting Emails from people who have seen some of my work and remarking on how much they like it. So, I guess it’s time to step up to the plate.

Drop me an Email. What do you have to lose? Remember what I said about first impressions…
